Screenshots of the month

Once again, Dutch is offering us some really amazing screenshots from our last combat mission: Operation Citadel! Thank you !

Oculus Rift S available for preorder

First shipment expected May 22nd.

Wags wrote a quick note about flying with the "S" on DCS:

" Hey everyone,

Oculus was kind enough to send us a couple Rift S kits to ensure best performance in DCS World. Based on the previews I've been reading from GDC, I was expecting more of a lateral quality move, with added inside-out tracking. However, compared to the Rift, I'm seeing a significantly higher resolution in DCS World where instrumentation is much easier to read, as well as spotting units outside the cockpit. Looking around the Hornet cockpit, I can read EVERYTHING. I'm very impressed with the DCS World experience in the Rift S. Inside-out tracking has been flawless for me, and Rift S setup could not be easier. If you are a Rift owner, I'd certainly suggest taking a very hard look at the Rift S; I find the experience considerably better.

Oculus has not asked me to write this, nor compensated in any way. I'm just a bit giddy after just flying with it.

Also, I’m sure you’re asking: where is the VR performance boost!? It’s coming. The VR optimization of the Caucasus map is done, and now the team is optimizing the other maps for improved VR performance. Once done and tested, we’ll release this in a future Open Beta."

New pictures from Syrian and Afghan Map

Some new pics posted from Ugra Media working on the next Syria/Afghan map. It's going to be amazing to fly low and slow on this map. Pretty exciting!

Persian Gulf Map final release

As usual, epic video from GlowingAmraam and incredible new airports and landmarks for this awesome map.

Featured Screenshot

A gorgeous screenshot by our pilot TNT is featured this month. This screenshot was taken during the second day of our Operation Triple Frontier. Don't forget to click on the picture to get the full size view.

RAZBAM confirms Falklands map on the way

Not a complete surprise but still a good one. Razbam confirmed on its FB page that they are indeed working on a DCS map for the Falklands islands, along with the units that come with this area/time (maybe another add on just like ED's WWII units?). Should be interesting to reactivate interest in maritime operations for choppers and sink some ships with the good old Kh-25 from a Ka-50.

SA-342 Gazelle coming out of beta for 2.5.1

Pat01 announced today (04/24) that his beautiful SA-342 Gazelle module is finally coming out of beta with some great additions, and also less great ones.

First of all, the minigun is coming on this helicopter with a 3rd position available in multicrew only for the copilot or in single player where you can keep flying the aircraft or set the autopilot to do it. Talking about multicrew, the NADIR is now becoming the responsibility of the weapon officer, but in the meantime, he is loosing the possibility to take the controls of the chopper (apparently due to DCS latency issues in multiplayer). Mistral is at last becoming multi aspect with a 7km range just like the real one. Intercom functionality is also added, as well as new keyboard and joystick assignment. Also the possibility to use a second joystick to control the Viviane sight. Negative G will damage the  chopper and tons of bugs removed along with some FM refinements. Really exciting.

BSD Dedicated server Up and Running!

Black Shark Den is now running a dedicated server (thanks Fargo!). BSD pilots are welcome to join 24/7, password is... well as usual. wink Tonight, during a last minute flight, we had a 906th pilot who joined us while we were doing some recon over the newly designed (in DCS 2.5) Enguri Dam next to Zugdidi. [Spoiler Alert] Next multi squadron mission will certainly be in the area. Stay tuned.

Join us on [BSD] BLACKSHARKDEN Dedicated (search BSD in the DCS MP server list).

Check out our 906th friend making a pass over two of our pilots who landed on the dam. Timing is everything!

Week 3 training cycle inbound

ED is opening the pre purchase of the DLC Map DCS: Persian Gulf

Formally known as Strait of Hormuz, ED just formally opened the pre purchase of DCS Persian Gulf, a DLC map that will make Middle Eastern scenario a bit more realistic than flying over Nevada. Buy it for $39.99 before price increase to $49.99 end of May (so I guess we have to expect a release early June).

Successful BSD multi squadrons event! (updated, now with the video!)

Thanks to the hard work of Fargo, Eagle and BK, Black Shark Den hosted on March 7th its first multi squadron event with the much appreciated participation of the 229th (Mi-8) and the 906th (AV-8B and A-10C). The mission was a success and the objectives were met thanks to the good coordination between the different squadrons. A lot of fun overall. A big thank you to all the attendees!

Groom lake was pretty busy with choppers this morning...

All the pilots are gathering at the end of the mission for a nice group photo.(one Ka50 missing?)

BSD Training Cycle program initiated

Excellent session with BSD pilots for our first training week of the program initiated by Eagle Rising. By creating a set of training sessions with defined objectives for each, we are seeking to set regular missions every week with the objectives to improve or maintain our piloting skills on different aircraft types. The first session of the cycle was addressing formation flight, formations, leading a formation, formation change and several procedures defined in the Black Shark Den's SOP.

Week 2 will deal with Terrain flight. Looking forward to it!

DCS 2.5 is coming out of Beta

This was kind of a surprise for the community but ED decided to get DCS 2.5 out of the beta stage. You will have to download the new installer on ED website. If you already have the Open Beta installed, it will copy about 100 Gb into the released version. Actually, the release version is identical to the open beta one for the moment. This also means you will need some free space on your hard drive or SSD. 256Gb SSD might have to delete the Open Beta and re download the whole 100Gb.cry

Strait of Hormuz new screenshots

There are plenty of pretty interesting screenshots from the upcoming Strait of Hormuz DLC map on ED website. This will certainly improve the attractiveness of desert operations in DCS with a more plausible area to fly than in Nevada with the NTTR map.

Polychop splits; welcome to Poly-Dynamics!

In a surprise announcement today, it appears that the Polychop group in charge of developing the BO105 is splitting up with the one in charge of the Gazelle. Polychop will keep developing the Gazelle while PolyDynamics will continue to develop the BO-105 (and the Stuka, but that's out of our scope).

Polychop is showing some signs of life!

After being completely silent for months, a short post appeared on ED forum on the 26th of April. It is so rare lately to have a PC developer posting that I had to paste it here. It's about the Gazelle's flight model:

Dear community.

First of all, we are still reading the postings and discussions of interest.

I can assure you that we discussed the Gazelle a lot in the past. Currently I am waiting for some response from the french army about the Gazelle.

At the moment what we can state is, that the SA342M Gazelle in the game flys very close to what the real thing is like. Unfortuantely the french SCAS system is always active in the background of the system and we did receive the intel that the pilots do fight the SCAS sytem regularly as we do to in the sim. We do await more data on the Gazelle. As soon we do have the intel we will take another look into the module. When that will be depends on many factors.

If someone is tired fighting the SCAS like the french army pilots, then we do recommend, same what the army pilots did tell us, to switch off all aiding systems like gyro and AP.

About the VRS what people do feel would be an issue, we have the following intel for you.

The french SA342M Gazelle has different composite blades then any other Gazelle version out there. The blades are optimised for lift do to the heavy Viviane system and it is very hard to bring the 342M into a VRS condition in reallife and in the sim. We have had a couple occasions though on the NEVADA map where we had experianced VRS in a high hover, hot weather condition and were not able to recover fast enough.

If anybody still has issues with the trim, please switch off the FFB function ingame. The trim should work as it is planed.

We wish you for now a happy flying and hope you still enjoy the Gazelle as we still enjoy her although we are stuck in new developments.

Oilfield Campaign

Few days only after Argo, here is Oilfield DLC campaign for the Mi-8. Apparently based on real world operations. Not a lot of information about it. Nothing is said regarding possible MP missions either. Latest update today  (1.5.6.4818 update 3) is supporting it.

Argo campaign

Argo campaign is about to get released and the promo video has already been released on ED channel. Argo is a SP only DLC campaign for the Huey.

Poly-Dynamics posts new pictures of the BO-105

And it shows... Hellfires! This gonna make some damages to the armored vehicles around.

Belsimtek Mi-8 news nb36

And another news two days later (12th). New option to choose between clean and dirty windshield.

Belsimtek Mi-8 news nb35

Extremely short news from BST, as usual, yesterday, April 10th. Mi-8 keeps having its FM refined, which is nice by the way since it is already the most realistic flight model available on DCS; nice roll and shake effect added when the rotor starts spinning.

You may have been missing this on BSD

You didn't fly at BSD this week? Look at what you missed!

GAZELLE MODULE FOR DCS 1.5.3

It looks like the availability of the gazelle module for 1.5.3 is scheduled for this coming Friday, along with the new Caucasus textures DLC.

CROSSER is the new BSD Gazelle Master :)

Check out the last fun flight we had to test this new beauty.

CAUCASUS TEXTURES DLC FROM STARWAY: Date and new price

So according to STARWAY himself, his DLC will be available on the 6th of June. They also lowered the price from 14$ down to 9,99$ which is pretty cool.

SCREENSHOTS OF THE NEXT DCS MAP: STRAIT OF HORMUZ

More than 10 years spent flying above Georgia, now Nevada and soon UAE areas in less than a year. What a cultural shock!

MESSAGE TO THE NEW REGISTERED MEMBERS

Dear rotorheads.

First of all thank you for the interest you are showing to Black Shark's Den. This site is pretty new and we are starting from scratch, but we believe there is a real need in the Americas region for a place to gather the fragmented DCS pilots population enjoying to fly slow and low. We are seeking to provide you with a way to fly your choppers in a more "rotary-wings friendly" multiplayer environment around a structured organization in the most realistic way.

Once you are officially a registered member, there are a couple of things you want to do (in the following order):

  1. Make sure you read the "About BSD" article,
  2. Go to the BSD forum and read the Registration Topic,
  3. Go to the Forum's Recruiting Office and post your application according to the elements required in 2. It's also a nice way to introduce yourself.
  4. Register to an introduction flight: find one and click on it from the calendar (next one is 29th of April) then click on register. Choose a group (Alpha, Bravo,...) according to the aircraft type you want to fly. Then submit your registration.

Introduction flights are here for us to get to know you, introduce ourselves and the BSD group, have an idea on how you fly and make sure you at least know on to use Team Speak and how to connect to an MP server.

Registering to a flight is very important as it allows the mission creator to adapt his mission to the number of pilots and aircraft type. It is also important for him to know if at least some people will show up at his mission.

Once you are done with these 4 points, and assuming you still want to fly here, you'll be granted a Trainee clearance to the site and a 'Private' rank. The full pilot status will be granted after a couple of flights together, and most importantly, after flying one of your MP mission. Members are indeed strongly encouraged to produce some material (MP missions) in order for everyone else to keep flying regularly.

Thanks guys.

Upcoming Caucasus Map Texture DLC

Starway is a pretty famous modder in the DCS community and his previous work on re-texturing the caucasus map was impressive. It's only fair for him to get some return from his hard work;

"This DLC is a complete retexturing of the existing DCS World Caucasus map to provide a new and improved look and feel. The objective of this DLC is not just to create more modern graphics, but to also make the map more resemble this geographic region. This has been accomplished by basing most of the textures on satellite images of the Caucasus region. Specially, the fields and grass areas much better match this region than the default map textures.

Beyond that, a great deal of time and effort has done into creating new building textures. They are high resolution now and are also based on the actual region. This is also true for the trees, surface textures beneath urban areas, and of course the mountains. These are remarkable changes to giving this map a huge level of improvement."

This DLC also contains features that are less apparent, such as: all the lua files (files for terrain configuration) has been improved, better road textures, updated noise and clutter textures, and the border textures between fields.

Caucasus Map Texture DLC by Starway Features:

– Noise/base textures in for all seasons

– Overall HD building textures for all building except airports

– Completely new field and grass textures for all seasons based on satellite images of the Caucasus region

– Tree textures for all seasons with a volumetric look

– Mountain textures based on satellite images for all seasons

– Distant terrain textures for all seasons

– New textures/noise for all cities, towns, and industrial areas for all seasons

– Border textures for all seasons

– New road textures for all seasons

– Adjusted terrain configuration files

It will cost $ 14.99 and will be available very soon!

Check out HERE.

More French Rotary wings?

RED WINGS simulations, a mod team I honestly never heard about before, is posting some pictures and a teaser about a possible NH-90 module. I don't know if this is going to be an official module or a mod, but considering the rather young age of the NH-90, I kinda doubt this project will ever reach the maturity required for a serious DCS module, but I would love to be wrong!

NH90 - teaser 2016 from MysteryFX R&D on Vimeo.

One will notice in the video the Tiger helicopter too.

You can follow the progress on their FB page here: https://www.facebook.com/RED-WING-Simulations-1682491965313023/

Gazelle

DCS SA342M Gazelle incoming!

For those who missed Wag's live video stream on his YouTube channel about the incoming new chopper module, have a look at the recording here (fast forward to 30:00 for the beginning)!

A lot of things to get excited with: thermal imager, high maneuverability, RWR and new HOT3 wire guided missiles. Should be available this month (April 2016).

Also, checkout the new textures for the Caucasus Map!
