Hey, just wanted to drop a heads-up that I have begun working on a mission.  Mission will be reminiscent of Dragon's "Rookie Terrorists" mission, but optimized for rotary-wing operations.   Current slots: KA-50 (4) -  SEAD/CAS MI-8 (3) - Transport/COIN UH-1 (3) - Transport/COIN   MI-8 and UH-1 will have the job of ferrying troops to enemy FOBs.  KA-50 will provide SEAD prior to transport arrival, and remain on-station to provide CAS until troops are extracted. Tentative end-state goals: enemy FOB captured and raided for intel enemy POW taken for interrogation enemy vehicles attached to FOB destroyed   This mission will be my first foray into scripted events with DCS, so it may take a minute to complete.  Ideally, I should have it ready by the weekend, but that may prove overly optimistic.

Great presentation Blackwolf and welcome to BSD. It's good you have such an extensive experience in MP and combat sim community. We are trying to fly once a week and heavily relying on the willingness of our community to propose missions to the rest of the group. I guess it should not be too much of a problem for you to fly with us. I hope we will be able to fulfill your expectations. We'll have a quick flight together so we can get to know you and so you get an idea if this group is what you are looking for. Before getting on a flight, make sure your TeamSpeak and headset are correctly configured. I'll PM you once there's an intro mission created for you (I'll try this week) so you can connect on our TS server.  BaDCrC

A little about me: I started with Flanker then Lock on/FC's offline and just toyed with it a little. I moved on to Warbirds 2.7 joined a squad and have been an online player ever since. I moved up to IL2 1946, started a squad and at one time ran 3 servers through HL and had fun doing so. I now fly Cliffs of Dover with my group but after almost 5 years I'm CLOD burnt out. Somewhere in there I rediscovered DCS world and bought a few modules A10c, BS2,FC3,CA and all the ww2 planes...and a bunch more(hope the wife won't see this! :D ) In my down time from Clod I would fly DCS,Su-27's KA-50's and some A10c's as well. I like BS2 the best but never flew on line.I can cold start, take off, fly to WP's, use the weapons, land but didn't think I knew enough to go on line and last that long. Well, as an on line player I'm bored of quick missions and flying by myself.I saw BadCrC post to a tailless KA I sort of landed before I blew up picture so I clicked on the link to see what BSD was and here I am. Thank you for your understanding, I am much more used to flying SP but really look forward to actual missions in the future. By the next flight I will have the TS settings worked out, the rotor noise was drowning out the coms. I will study the datalink settings, I understand the basics but it isn't used a lot SP and finding matches online is hard, that is why I look forward to future flights with you guys. There is a lot of great materiel out there to reference. BaDCrC, I agree completely with setting up a 2nd into flight, I am fairly open especially evenings so whenever works best for you. I will keep an eye on the mission board.

This is interesting, I might look into this myself. It's handy having a physical implementation for the PVI/Datalink sometimes, 2-Way feedback would be fantastic for this (ie: datalink lighting when receiving new information)

    April 30 at 3:49 pm

Greetings fellow Kamov Pilots! I recently ran across an application for Android and IOS which allows extremely customizable shortcut and macro buttons to be sent from your tablet/phone to your PC.  I have been fiddling around with it since yesterday, working on a KA-50 profile.  The software does not seem to allow for feedback from the game (unfortunately) so switches are not state-aware.  I have been using cut-and-paste graphics from the cockpit textures for buttons, some of them are fairly ugly, but it's still a WIP. functions presently featured include: Datalink PVI-800 R-800 tuner knobs SPU-9 selector switch Weapon control panel Target Mode controls Exterior lights The software is available for free, though if you want to use more than two custom "grids" of buttons at the same time, you have to pa ~$1 per additional grid, up to a maximum of 10 grids (fairly reasonable, especially considering the funcionality)   The control software is available at: http://www.roccat.org/en-US/Products/Gaming-Software/Power-Grid/Download/   KA-50 Profile is available at: http://www.roccat.org/en-US/Products/Gaming-Software/Power-Grid/Store/Grids/Games/Simulation/755/

Right after the intro flight, Crosser and I couldn't resist a flight over Nevada with the new Gazelle. Crosser had shown impressive skills at flying this extremely sensitive chopper.   Crosser and I on top of one of the casino on the strip. My landing was pretty poor. Crosser explained to me the start up procedure, shooting a tow and flying this beauty. It was great and he deserves his first SA342 certification tag as well as the SA342 flight instructor. On my side, I need to work and practice a lot more on this chopper.

So it was a pretty busy introduction flight tonight: Crosser (thanks for joining even though you already did an intro flight!) M1Combat (thank you too) Shurugal Xarkov We are all happy to have you guys part of the BSD group! The flight was really informal with little to no procedures, but you all show a good capability to fly your Kamov 50. A few remarks: Shurugal: well, nothing actually. You are sooo ready for combat. Impressive flying, autorotation master, no problem with formation, comfortable with datalink, ready to take the lead in a mission. A warm welcome to BSD. Xarkov: I guess you would have enjoyed the flight a lot more with a properly configured headset. Don't forget to have your TS config all set as well as your sounds in DCS well balanced with your TS ones next time. Since we couldn't talk to you, it was difficult to really have an idea about how comfortable you are with your Kamov 50. This is not preventing you from becoming a trainee, but lets quickly re schedule another intro flight just with you if you are OK with that. Welcome to BSD. In general: Beginning of the mission. Please check the time zone. M1Combat, you missed the first hour of the mission since the time for it was 9:00 EST (ROMEO) and not CST.  Zulu Time Zone Map Crosser and Shurugal suggested to go for UTC next time. Always remember to acknowledge whatever order you received. It is so hard when you don't know if your wingman heard you. Remember to log your flight hours in your logbook.

Hello Shurugal and thank you for this great presentation. I do hope we will be able to meet your expectations. Well, at least there is no room here for fixed-wing so it should be alright on this side. As you can see, we are just getting started and we do have already some IRL soldiers who joined with have some similar constraints than yours. I could see most of the pilots here so far either having a pretty good experience and knowledge of DCS, or pilots who are really eager to go serious about it. And this is what BSD is all about after all, coop missions in a mature and as realistic as possible way (as long as it stays fun for everyone though). I say that all the time, but it is important for everyone to be able to propose missions from time to time. No missions to fly→ end of BSD and yes, we all have a busy professional and family life outside DCS. I have to admit I didn't understand your personal note part, but I am not in the military so I am missing all the acronyms and more. Don't bother about the edit issue. Absolutely everybody had the same one (except me, but that's the admin privilege I guess). I am talking with the dev of this forum to understand what's going on with you guys. So yes, it is definitively on my side. There's an intro flight tomorrow although it is not exactly your time (9:00pm EST). But if you can make it, it would be great. Otherwise, I promised Isegrim to set up a mission/intro flight during a weekend, so I have to do that before the end of next week.

Looking forward to it.   I don't know what the etiquette is here about missions but I went through the mission we flew by myself up to the APC departure (got killed by the MANPAD) and in retrospect it didn't seem that complex or difficult.  I was apparently just not thinking and then got surprised by the threats.  In the solo fly-through I noticed that the waypoint route changed from green to blue at about WP10.  Does this generally indicate fence in?

Thanks guys for this feedback. Not to worry about how our performance. This mission was tagged as complex anyway and it was certainly a rough introduction to anyone who never flew coop MP missions before. At least, we have some directions for improvement; - Radio comm: without going into the extreme, certainly a bit more practice of radio comms along with some common brevity. I'll post in the library a short list of brevity vocabulary useful to helicopter ops. Also, Macer is right about using the mission's aircraft callsign rather than the pilot's callsign. Finaly but probably the most important, read back what your leader is telling you. No read back from wingmen makes leading extremely difficult. - Taxiing: waiting for your group leader's go to start up your aircraft. Call back when your aircraft is ready to go. Wait for group leader's order to start to taxi. In highly populated and complex missions, the leader is in charge of the radio comms with the control so he can't have his wingmen already flying around the airport before he's even ready to contact the ground. - Always stick with your wingman (or wingmen). We all know we are super easy targets, even for AK47s so keep an eye on your assigned wingman so he can keep an eye on you. - Datalink. We can have a dedicated session on it if you need. It will make your life soooo much easier if you are familiar with the DL in the Kamov.  - Briefing: for a complex mission, it's highly recommended to have it in sight somewhere. For simple missions, a quick description in the field dedicated to missions creation in the website is normally enough. In both cases, please read them. - Debriefings: thanks M1Combat! I am so glad you appreciated. Tacview is helping a lot. - Register missions. You will make the mission designer's life much easier, See some of you friday. We'll set up another mission next week for sure.

I had a great time (though short :)).    On the "Very Forward Recon" role I chose ;)...  For some reason I thought we still had quite a ways to go before we were anywhere near enemy contact.  I got quite the startle when I heard someone yell Alahu Akhbar and fire an AK-47 at me.  Prior to that I had been following Crosser and not paying so much attention to where we were relative to briefing locations.   At any rate...  I'll try to do better about those things in the future.   Things I learned...   How to load a flight plan. AK-47's are a LOT more dangerous than one would think.   Things I need to learn... How to Taxi ;).  Will work on that soon :).   To be honest though...  Why don't we just lift?  We're driving helicopters...  It's one of their primary advantages :).  I assume it has to do with ground crew expectation as well as general runway traffic patterns?

Thanks, CrC, for the mission and great briefing and debrief.  This was actually the first time I've used the Ka-50 in combat - multiplayer or otherwise!  Well, I've only owned it since 2014.  :) My feedback: - No need to get rid of the IMC as long as everyone is coordinated before take-off, ie. knows what speed, altitude, climb rate, formation we're flying at - Maybe it would be helpful to call everyone by their group call sign (red 1, angel 1, etc) so it doesn't get too confusing.  We did it a bit last night. Things I've learned from the mission: - how to use the ADF needle on the compass - how to load a flight plan - how to slave the shkval to a datalink target !  (looked it up after the mission) Was fun.  Thanks again. • BaDCrC created new topic Debrief Op Chammal and new Trainees!.

    April 26 at 5:38 am

Mission roster: BaDCrC, Blackjack, Crosser, Macer, M1Combat. All those pilots are now BSD trainees. Total flight: 2,5 hours (for the pilots who made it to the end). Please remember to complete your logbook accordingly. Well it was great to fly with you guys. The mission was a bit difficult to start with due to the bad weather. If you are not used to fly IMC, that's kinda hard to go through this layer of clouds, even though it was only 500m thick. We had to redo the mission once since we ran out of Ka50 to provide protection to the Hip. On the second run, only Blackjack made it back to the base. But the primary and secondary objectives were destroyed in the killzone Alpha. Thanks to Crosser (who left us abruptly following a power outage) for sharing his knowledge on the ABRIS and the way to load a flight plan. Mission part 1: Things went alright at the beginning. Taxiing shall be performed ideally rolling on the ground otherwise it is quick to loose sight of your leader, even more  in such a crappy weather with very limited horizontal visibility. Let's not forget the lights when on or near a friendly airport. Taxiing required landing lights, anti collision and nav lights ON. Reaching the HA over Zoti, we started to gather before taking the ingress route. Remember, once you pass the Holding Area, you are most likely entering hostile territory and therefore have all your ligths off (call "Lights OFF"). Then we are going 'Fence In' (weapon master arm on and laser one).  M1Combat kept going forward beyond HA to BP through the ingress route without cover. He took heavy fire from a group of infantry patrolling the valley but it took some time for the rest of the Ka50 to regroup on him and spot the enemy.  Macer then overflew the suspected enemy position to draw fire (and that's what happened), so the rest of the Ka50 group can spot and destroy the enemy infantry. Remember to always get your back checked by your wing men when moving into unknown threat areas.  Saddly, we lost M1Combat because of what appears to be a rough maneuver that ended up braking this aircraft's main rotor. When reaching Battle Position (BP) south of killzone Alpha, the remaining group of 2 Kamov (the Hip (me), was busy recovering the group of delta commandos) went a bit too far into the enemy protection bubble and  triggered a lot of retaliation.  The lack of reconnaissance before entering the battle zone never pays off. The damage taken by Macer and Blackjack was significant. Finaly, Macer went close enough to to be in range of the Manpads unit and got shot by an SA18 (below) At that point we restarted the mission as the remaining aircraft were not sufficient to achieve the mission. This time, the flight was composed only with Ka50. The flight group maintained the formation with a good coordination recon/attack configuration so the front aircraft always got her back covered Here, 2nd group of terrorist patrol met and destroyed by BSD by BlackSJack and BadCrc while Macer is going for cover.   At the BP, the 3 arcraft spreaded normally and were able to properly exchange datalink from each respective position. The, primary and secondary were engaged. Once the area safer, a first pass on the secondary target was possible: But there was some good resistance: First, Macer had to do an emergency landing then BaDCrC thanks to the unhappy infantry around the ammo depot. Finaly, only BlackJack made it with some damage, back to Kutaisi.  Congrats to M1Combat and BlackJack, now officially part of the BSD as Trainees. We will fly again this mission, maybe without the IMC arrival and departure this time. Let me know what you guys think about it. There is still a lot of Hip exfil to do, KA50 escorts, and a whole ammo depot and training camp to take care of.

We have several pilots here that are pretty good at it also. We can organize some dedicated meetings.  Yes, you'll need a headset or it will make flying together in a mission very difficult. IF you can get one before this coming Friday (29th), please register and join the introduction flight at 9:00 PM EST. We'll chat and fly and shoot things just for the sake of introducing each others. I know! I have to figure out why it does this to everyone. Anyway, post edited and reformatted. Very good presentation and interesting too. I hope flying evenings EST won't be too early for you then. I completely understand your constraints. Real life is always more important here at BSD. So no worry if you have to leave in the middle of a flight. TIR is very useful but not mandatory for flying effectively with the shark. I can see you already have the basics for mission editing. MP missions do not really require a hardcore level to be fun. I remember some pretty nice ones that took the creator about 10 minutes. What's nice usually is the story behind the missions/campaign. I am really glad to see that we have some members considering building up campaigns. This is very promising for our group. If you are available, please register and join the introduction mission next Friday (29th). We'll chat a lot and fly a little. We might even shoot things!

  • BaDCrC created new topic [KA50/MI8] Operation Chammal; First complex mission on BSD.

    April 19 at 2:19 am

Guys, it's time to get some serious action. Operation Chammal is a combined Ka50/Mi8 complex mission requiring good coordination between AHs (RED) and CHs (ANGEL): escorting and clearing the way of the CH, assassination mission, commandos exfiltration. It will take some high altitude hovering and some IMC flight as the weather is not great in the valley. Knowing how your radio/radio nav system works is also highly recommended. Please read the full briefing here:  Operation Chammal Several terrorist attacks have been reported in the Georgian region of Guria. 5 days ago, a mass shooting in the capital Ozurgeti revealed the existence of an organized terrorist network seeking to spread chaos in the area in order to trigger a religious war across Georgia. Although most of the Ozurgeti attackers have been neutralized, some successfully escaped to hide in remote areas along the border of the autonomous republic of Ajara. These areas have long been known for being a hideout for terrorists of this organization, receiving financial support as well as weapons from the Ajara republic. Two Delta force teams inserted nearby the Ajara border 3 days ago.  Delta Force team 2 discovered an important terrorist training camp in the village Gomismta with a very significant military vehicle storage. Delta Force team 1 discovered a significant terrorist logistic center in the village of Bakhmaro but most importantly, identified the hideout of the main instigator of the Ozurgeti mass shooting in this very same village. It was decided yesterday to launch a massive intervention on those two villages. Recon photographs from one of our HALE drone as well as from our satellite a few hours ago indicated a high level of activity. As a result, two strike forces are being readied as we speak to go and neutralize the threats in the village of Gomismta and Bakhmaro, despite the bad weather on Kutaisi from where we will be operating. In addition, an exfiltration operation will also take place in the meantime to get our two Delta force teams back to Kutaisi. Remember to register to this mission!

Great Crosser, let me  know. Macer, yeah it's gonna be pretty basic stuff so that everyone can bring something to the community quick and easy. There will not be any scripting stuff or lua craziness, so you might not learn anything. I am looking forward to fly your mission. Let me know when you want to fly it.

Hi, there. I think I'm fairly proficient with the ME so I probably won't attend if you're just covering the basics.  If you do a more in-depth session later on, I'll likely attend.  There's always stuff to learn, right! As for building missions, I can try to put one together in the next couple of weeks.  Any preferences on the "flavour" of the mission? As an aside, for the past few years, I've been working on a dynamic campaign engine that will play out a fairly large scale (hundreds of units) armour battle.  I'm working on implementing CAS aircraft right now (A-10C and Su-25T) but will definitely be implementing helicopters down the line.  Everything is still in early stages but it would interesting to play the campaign in multi-player where mission after mission, you help friendly ground forces move towards the objective.

    April 14 at 7:57 pm

Next week guys, I won't be able to access my main DCS cockpit PC so I thought about doing a quick desktop training sessions on the Mission Editor from my laptop. As I mentioned to some of you, it is vital for any flight group like this one to have all its members being able to propose missions as these are the life and blood of such organization. The knowledge for the mission editor appears to be very variable across the group so I guess this would be useful to gather around the ME and create a simple mission from scratch live (for those who don't feel comfortable with it). This should give the absolute survival level in mission editing so you can propose a nice and easy mission soon and earn your pilot's rank within BSD. Please register to this event if you want to attend so I can figure out if Skype will be able to handle it or if we need some better piece of screen sharing software. I am not pretending to be an expert missions builder so any of you wanting to share your experience with the others are most welcomed. Thank you!

  • BaDCrC replied to the topic Gazelle.

    April 12 at 3:35 am

Regarding the performances, in its viviane SA342 version, it is not a very fast chopper, but at least faster than the Huey. The basic Gazelle version (no viviane sight, no hot3 missiles) Vne is 310 km/h. Once you load it up with all the anti tank gear, the Vne drops to 280km/h. This gives you a cruise speed around 200/210 km/h which is a bit slow for the 250 cruise speed of the Ka50 but reasonably close to the cruise speed of the Hip. Although it will look odd from a "realistic" point of view, it will be great to have a complete set of capabilities with AH for the Ka50, CH/UH for the Hip and OH for the Gazelle. But at least we will get some custom skins at release with the US and Russian skins.

Definitively a first buy for me. OK, you can say it's a bit biased since it's a french chopper, and you might be slightly right, but there are some things from this chopper that are pretty exciting; RWR, Thermal Imager capability which is a first for a rotary in DCS, high maneuverability, incredible cockpit that will be awesome  in VR. I actually got some insight from people within the dev team that I know and there are more awesome things coming (please keep it for yourself): The module is planned to be out mid april (kinda now). At least that's the team's objective. It should be around 50$, as usual for a high quality module (4 years in the works). This is the Viviane version with HOT3 missile and Viviane targeting system. In summer, you should get a free upgrade with new models: the one with rockets and 20mm canon, a civilian one, and.... the Mistral version (SA342L1) with 4 Mistral AA missiles!!! Yes, AA capability for a DCS chopper!! At last we will not be soft targets for everything that flies! For those of you who never heard about the Mistral missile, it's a reverse engineered Stinger. Very short range (about 7 km). IR seeker. PK is similar to Stinger.

I am used to set flights at 2100 but this is certainly flexible for the next ones. Depending on the availability of the other pilots, 2000 or even 1900 are possible. And I won't be the only one anyway (I hope) to set up missions.

    April 9 at 11:30 pm

Dear all, The 2nd BSD meeting/flight will be held this coming Monday night (April 11st) for all the registered members (well, those who are available of course, real life first!). The idea is not quite yet to jump in a chopper and start to shoot tanks and shilkas, but more to get to know each other, get a grip on the knowledge and level of everyone so we can start to build missions that everyone can enjoy. No stress, this is not a test where one can fail (unless you actually never flew on DCS which is apparently not the case for any of you from what I could read on the Recruiting topic). Meeting point is on the BSD TS server. Here is the procedure. 1. Install and launch TeamSpeak3 client (guess you have done that years ago) 2. Go to Connections then Connect 3. Server Address is: blacksharkden.teamspeak3.com 4. Enter your call sign in the Nickname field 5. Enter: watchekran in the Server Password field See you there!

With that out of the way, I love helos, always have and probably always will. I've been eyeing up a PPL for rotorcraft. DCS is probably my #1 pastime whenever I've got the chance, I'm also proficient with other various fixed-wing craft but as I said previously I do enjoy the whirly birds the best. While I do not know everything regarding the KA-50, I do know a lot about it, including Datalink usage, custom waypoints (a bit rusty on that) and have also done FAC-A (Forward Air Control-Airborne) for A-10's from the Shark. I enjoy CSAR, troop trans and just flying around in either the Huey or Hip.

Hello Blackjack and thanks for your application. Impressive number of hours indeed on the Ka50! The MI-8 is also a fantastic module although it doesn't look very sexy at the beginning. Fingers crossed indeed for the Mi-24! We will certainly have some sessions on the mission editor in the coming future as it is very important, I believe, that every pilot is regularly contributing to the life of the group. We will be trying to fly at least once a week. We all have a busy life beside DCS and there is no obligation to take part in every flight.  Would you like to join us for our next flight/meeting Monday evening 2100 Romeo? We might not shoot tanks right away, but it's a way to assess the levels, the expectations and to get to know each other.

  • TXSailor created new topic Looks like I'm up first....

    April 6 at 2:31 am

Callsign: TXSailor Age: 23 ISP: Cable, ~80mbps Central Time Zone My weekly availability is completely unpredictable, as my schedule doesn't get published until about 1730 the day before. In DCS I've probably got at least 100 hours of flight time in mixed platforms. I know absolutely nothing about the mission editor. Heck, I can't even place a plane on the tarmac without messing it up. For preferred helo, I enjoy the Mi-8 and UH-1 about equally. My expectations: I'd like an excuse to do some more helo flying, and ideally something that actually makes use of the transport platforms in unique ways, rather than just blasting a bunch of rockets around. So, now that I've got those out of the way, I'll give you a brief intro: I'm a fixed wing guy by trade (Currently a Navy strike student in real life) but I have a secret love affair with helicopters, primarily the troop transport role. I'm really looking for a group to get together, and a server I can pop in on that focuses on the helo side of things, as, just as you've mentioned, it's nothing like the fast-movers. I've got about 100 hours mixed in DCS, flying a little bit of everything, and even more time IRL in just about anything that gets off the ground.
